+1 Loot To Forge Runes Guide — Types, Slots & Overwrites
How runes work in +1 Loot To Forge: the four rune types, the two-slot limit, the permanent overwrite cost and which gear deserves your first runes.
Runes are the Enhance update’s customization layer: drop-in effects that stack on top of forged gear. The system is simple to use and unforgiving to misuse — two slots per item, and overwriting destroys the old rune permanently. This guide covers the four types, where runes drop, and the slotting rules that avoid expensive mistakes.
The four rune types
| Rune | Family | Best on | Style |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flame | Damage | Stage-pushing weapons | Straight damage pressure |
| Thunder | Damage | Fast clear builds | Burst-oriented pressure |
| Frost | Control | Horde stages and tower rounds | Slows enemy pressure |
| Poison | Damage-over-time | Long fights and bosses | Scales with fight length, weak in quick clears |
There is no globally best rune — Poison wins long boss fights and loses short stage clears; Frost carries horde waves that burst builds breeze past. Match the rune to the content you are actually farming, and swap gear (not runes) between activities since slotting is permanent.
Where runes come from
The Frostbound Tower is the rune engine: its 30-round runs drop runes alongside Ember Stones, one Tower Ticket per run (tower guide). Event rewards and update drops have also carried runes; the tower is the repeatable source.
The two-slot rule and how to not waste it
- First runes go into keeper gear only. If a weapon is a stepping stone to the next recipe tier, it does not deserve runes — slot into what you will keep across rebirths.
- Overwrite = destroy. Sloting a new rune into an occupied slot destroys the old rune with no refund. There is currently no documented way to extract or move a rune.
- Pair with intent. Two damage runes on the pushing weapon, a Frost rune on horde-clearing gear — think in pairs per item, not a global collection.
- Rune after enhance. Runes belong on end-state items; enhancing first tells you which items are actually keepers (see the enhance guide).
Rune value by progression stage
- Early: skip runes entirely — your gear turns over too fast. Save Tower Tickets and runes come later anyway.
- Mid: first serious slots on the greatsword-class keeper and one armor piece for tower runs.
- Late: full pairs on keeper set; Poison or Flame for boss content, Frost for wave content. The tier list ranks which gear earns those pairs.
FAQ
Can I remove a rune in +1 Loot To Forge?
No — overwriting a slot destroys the old rune permanently. That is why first slots should go into keeper gear you will not replace.
What is the best rune?
Flame and Thunder for stage pushing, Frost for horde and tower content, Poison for long boss fights — match the rune to the content rather than chasing a single best pick.
How do I farm runes?
Run Frostbound Tower runs with your daily tickets; 30-round runs drop runes alongside Ember Stones.
